1887, Vincent van Gogh, Montmartre: Windmills and Allotments -- Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam)
From the museum label: Van Gogh regularly painted the picturesque mills on the hill of Montmartre. He hoped that the subject would sell well. He derived the fresh, pure colours - the white in the fields, the bright blue of the little sheds - from contemporary French art. Van Gogh opted for a pronounced horizontal format, making the impression of a wide-angle shot. An array of paths and garden allotments lead our eyes into the distance.
