1900, Edvard Munch, Fertility -- Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam)

From the museum label: Like Van Gogh, Munch searched for a way to express the great human themes in his work. Colour played a central role for him, as did symbolism. In this painting, the pregnant woman, the picked cherries and the farm labourer represent fertility. The combination of bright green, red and blue hues underscores this theme of the perpetuation of life.
