From the museum label: In the summer and autumn of 1886, Van Gogh painted almost 40 flower still lifes in Paris. As he wrote later on, he painted 'almost nothing but flowers'. By painting these still lifes, he wanted to study the question of colour'. He practised a loose way of painting and worked with strong colour contrasts. In this painting, he contrasted the red of the flowers with the bright green of the leaves.
