1888, Vincent van Gogh, An Old Woman of Arles -- Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam)
From the museum label: Van Gogh wanted to create 'modern portraits' in Arles. For this portrait of an old woman from Arles he was inspired by Bernard's painting of his grandmother (next to this). Just look at the women's imperturbable expressions, the decorative patterns in the background and the dark shapes of their clothes and headscarves. Also striking are the corner of the bed in the background of Van Gogh's painting, and the hatbox and pillow or quilt in Bernard's.
