1889, Vincent van Gogh, Pieta (after Delacroix) -- Van Gogh Museum (Amsterdam)
From the museum label: Van Gogh copied prints already in his early years, and began doing so again in Saint-Rémy. The Pietà, after a painting by Eugène Delacroix, was the first print of which he made a painted copy. It is quite possible that while he was in the institution Van Gogh identified with the suffering Christ. He wrote: 'I am not indifferent, and in the very suffering religious thoughts sometimes console me a great deal.'
