1690 (ca.), Gerrit Berckheyde, The Weigh House on the Spaarne -- Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem)
From the museum label: Gerrit Berckheyde shows us the Spaarne late in the 17th century. The focus is on the Weigh House where produce was weighed and measured before it was sold in the city. The costly blue granite gives the building a striking appearance. Beside the Weigh House, Berckheyde painted the wooden crane with which goods were hoisted ashore from the boats. As in his other city views, the contrast of light and shade lends a sense of drama.
