From the museum label: The distinguished Haarlem resident Nicolaes van der Meer (1574-1637) was a brewer, sheriff, several times burgomaster and officer in the civic guard. Van der Meer's portrait is a pendant to Cornelia Vooght's. They married in 1589. Hals accentuated Nicolaas' informal yet self-assured attitude by positioning him behind a chair, resting his hand on its back.
