1911, Gustave de Smet, Evening on the Lake -- Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem)

From the museum label: The Flemish painter Gustave de Smet painted the river Leie in evening light. It is an early work which he made when, after a period of searching, he thought he had found his bearings in the painting style of the impressionists. Later on in his career he reconsidered this decision. He had come to realize "how inadequate the possibilities to express [himself] in that style were and [...] restlessly searched on". After having seen modernistic work in the Netherlands he changed his course and applied himself to a style that did not focus on the beauty of a landscape but on his 'inner life'.
