1617 (ca.), Frans Hals, Young Man -- Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem)
From the museum label: With his hand on his hip, the young man casts a confident look our way. He has style, with his tall hat, fashionable collar and gloves. Frans Hals was well-known as a portrait painter and his paintings were usually life-size. But even on a small panel, Hals's skill as a portraitist was masterful. Whether the image is a true likeness we can never know, but we can certainly imagine the man's swagger and elegance.
