1655 (ca.), Gerard ter Borch, Portrait of Antonie Charles de Liederkercke, his wife Willemina van Braeckel and their son Samuel -- Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem)
From the museum label: This is a far from happy painting. The parents had commissioned Gerard ter Borch to paint their portrait with their son Samuel, who is depicted here aged about 16. In fact, he had died shortly after enrolling at Leiden University. Perhaps his parents wanted the portrait as a tribute to their son's memory. Ter Borch symbolised that Samuel's time had run its course with the closed pocket watch in Willemina's hand.
