1929 (ca.), Else Berg, Self-Portrait with Brushes -- Frans Hals Museum (Haarlem)
From the museum label: Else Berg's paintings earned her considerable success: no mean feat for a woman in her day. She was in her fifties when she painted this self-portrait as an artist, holding her brush and palette. Her piercing gaze recalls the work of Charley Toorop - Berg knew Toorop and her work well. The life and career of Else Berg came to an abrupt end: she was a Jew, one of the many murdered by the Nazis in Auschwitz.
