From the museum label: Here Hals painted the four female administrators of the Old Men's House, seated around a table. Behind them is the so-called 'binnenmoeder', the house mother. Together with the 'house father' she was in charge of the day-to-day management of the home. It was previously thought that Frans Hals himself had lived in this home, but that turns out not to be the case. Hals painted this work when he was over eighty years old, thus already an 'old man'. The painting has recently been restored.
