From the museum label: Daniele Barbaro was a theologian and scientist. He is shown here with his translation of an architectural treatise by the ancient Roman architect Vitruvius. The book was published in 1556 with illustrations by the renowned architect Palladio. The latter regularly collaborated with Veronese, the painter of this portrait, for instance on the Villa Barbaro, the sitter's large villa at Maser.
