1639, Frans Hals, Portrait of Maritge Claesdr Vooght -- Rijksmuseum (Amsterdam)
From the museum label: Brewing beer was originally a cottage industry done by women at home. However, in the 17th century breweries developed into commercial enterprises that were automatically registered in their husband's name. Maritge Vooght's family owned such a brewery in Haarlem. She married Pieter Olycan, who thus became co-heir of the brewery. Later, he opened one of his own. Vooght managed the business during his absence. The brewery was later continued by daughter Geertruyt.
