From the museum label: Rickshaws, horse-drawn carriages and men wearing European-style hats pass between rows of teahouses towards Shintomi Theatre, located in Tokyo's Shinjuku district. Manager Morita Kan'ya XII (1846-1897) modernised traditional kabuki theatre with international dramas and foreign performers. He led the world of Meiji kabuki until the building in 1889 of the rival Kabuki Theatre, which survives today.
