1904, Utagawa Kunimasa V, Telegraph Dispatches from the Russo-Japanese War -- British Museum (London)

From the museum label: In this scene, bandits from northeast China destroy a railroad that Russia had built across Manchuria. The bonfire and steam from the horse's nostrils suggest freezing conditions. Chinese bandits had been interfering for years with Russia's efforts to control Manchuria. Their acts of sabotage benefitted Japan during the Russo-Japanese War (1904-5). The war spurred a revival in the production of woodblock prints.
