1872, Koyohara Kunichika, Scene from the Subscription List -- British Museum (London)

From the museum label: Kabuki theatre survived into the Meiji era (1868-1912), due largely to the efforts of stars such as Ichikawa Danjūrō IX (1838-1903). Here at centre, he performs as the warrior-monk Benkei in a celebrated production of The Subscription List, a traditional play staged in 1872. Joining him are Ichikawa Sadanji I (right) and Iwai Hanshirō VIII (left).
