From the museum label: Chinese generals Liu Bei (AD 161-223), shown wearing a red robe, Zhang Fei (about AD 161-227) in a blue robe and Guan Yu (about AD 160-219) wearing yellow, swear mutual loyalty in a peach garden. Their oath opens the Chinese historical novel Romance of the Three Kingdoms (1300s), which became widely known in Japan through popular translations, kabuki stage dramatisations and recitation by storytellers.
