From the museum label: Kabuki actor Kawarasaki Gonjūrō I (1838-1903) strides onto a runway leading to the stage. His character discovers a band of robbers tormenting innocent people. Framed by red sleeves, he commands in a dignified tone, 'Hold it right there!' This role is performed only by an actor of the Ichikawa family. Gonjūrō I, later known as Ichikawa Danjūrō IX, led kabuki into the modern era.
