1840, J.M.W. Turner, Venice from the Giudecca (detail) -- Victoria & Albert Museum (London)

From the museum label: Here Turner experimented with light and colour, contrasting his luminous depiction of the domed church of Santa Maria della Salute with the muddy hues of the water below. When he exhibited this painting at the Royal Academy in 1840, it received mixed reviews. It was only the support of bold collectors like John Sheepshanks that allowed Turner to continue exploring landscape painting in a radically different manner from his contemporaries.
