1882, Paul Cezanne, Three Bathers -- Tate Modern (London) (special exhibition)

From the museum label: Placing himself under considerable financial burden, Matisse purchased this painting from Vollard in 1899. When he later gifted the work to the Petit Palais museum, in Paris, he wrote to the curator: 'In the 37 years I have owned this canvas... it has sustained me morally in the critical moments of my venture as an artist. I have drawn from it my faith and my perseverance. Cezanne's bathers influenced Matisse's practice as a painter and similarly proportioned figures appear in his sculptural work.
