1540 (ca.), Michelangelo Buonarotti, The Holy Family with Saint John the Baptist -- Ashmolean Museum (Oxford)
From the museum label: The Virgin and Child with Saint Joseph and the young Saint John the Baptist are shown in movement. The subject may be the Holy Family returning from Egypt, where they had fled Herod's persecution.
Essentially this is a brush drawing in a thin wash of brown oil paint on a ground prepared with a green earth colour. It relates to various compositions by Michelangelo from about 1520 onwards. The unusual design and treatment of the subject are typical of his work.
