1619 (ca.), Anthony van Dyck, The Deposition -- Ashmolean Museum (Oxford)

From the museum label: The dead Christ, with blood flowing from his wounds, has been taken down from the cross, and is mourned by the Virgin Mary, Mary Magdalene, and John the Evangelist. The sacrifice of Christ refers to the Eucharist or sacrament of the Mass. With its emphasis on physical suffering, this altar- piece would have acted as a call to repentance.

Van Dyck probably painted this about 1619, before he left Antwerp on his first visit to England. Its original location is unknown. The deliberate emotional appeal is typical of religious art of the 1600S.
