From the museum label: George Drummond (1758-1789) was the son of John Drummond of Stanmore, and the grandson of the founder of Drummonds Bank. He married Martha, the eldest daughter and heiress of the Right Honourable Thomas Harley, on 30 November 1779.
This portrait and its companion of Mrs Drummond (Montreal Museum of Fine Arts) were probably commissioned for Harley's new house, Berrington Hall, Herefordshire (now owned by the National Trust).
