1887, Vincent van Gogh, The Restaurant de la Sirene, Asnieres -- Ashmolean Museum (Oxford)
From the museum label: After leaving his native Holland in 1886, Van Gogh spent two years in Paris. He was greatly impressed by Impressionism and Pointillism, and began to paint with short brush-strokes and bright colours.
The suburb of Asnières on the Seine was popular with artists, and Van Gogh made three paintings of this restaurant in the summer of 1887. This view was taken from the riverside, probably early in the morning. The stillness of the scene contrasts strongly with the jaunty flags displayed on the restaurant.
