1590 (ca.), Tintoretto (Jacopo Robusti), Ecce Homo (Behold the man) -- Ashmolean Museum (Oxford)
From the museum label: Tintoretto painted scenes from the Passion of Christ in extremely expressive ways. In this late work, probably from 1585-90, he used rapid brushwork, dark tones and luminous flashes to create dramatic and moving effects.
Christ was scourged, mocked as a would-be king, and crowned with thorns. He was then presented to the people of Jerusalem by the Roman governor, Pontius Pilate, with the words 'Behold the man'. This image of suffering was a powerful call to devotion.
