1871, Claude Monet, A Mill near Zaandam -- Ashmolean Museum (Oxford)
From the museum label: During Monet's first visit to Holland in 1871, he spent four months at Zaandam, about 12 miles north of Amsterdam. He noted that there were 'houses in every colour, mills by the hundred and delightful boats' and enough to paint for a lifetime.
Among the 24 canvases to survive from this summer, several show the windmills near Zaandam. This work shows a windmill under an overcast sky, painted on a white ground which gives luminosity to the scene.
