1450, Benozzo Gozzoli (probably), The Virgin and Child with Angels -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: Flowering hedgerows and a floral tapestry form an enclosed garden, symbolic of virginity, within which the Virgin and Child are canopied. Christ reaches for a goldfinch, a symbol of his Passion. This type of image was often paired with images of the Crucifixion, especially in Siena, to form a portable, private devotional aid.
