1640 (ca.), Peter Paul Rubens, A Wagon fording a Stream -- National Gallery (London)

From the museum label: A wagon negotiates its way down a steep bank, the rider's red jacket catching our eye. In this unfinished sketch, Rubens's black chalk drawing, and the reddish-brown ground that gives the painting its warmth of tone, are clearly visible. Rubens has begun to block in the greens and browns, and patches of sky between the trees.
