1634, Rembrandt van Rijn, Ecco Homo (Behold the Man) -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: The subject known as Ecce Homo (Behold the Man) derives from Pilate's words in the gospel of Saint John (19: 5). Pilate presents Christ to the people who demand his execution, insisting that they have no king but Caesar. This sketch is the only known full-scale preparatory study Rembrandt made for one of his etchings.
