1478 (ca.), Hans Memling, The Donne Triptych -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: Sir John Donne, a Welsh courtier and diplomat resident in Calais, kneels in prayer to the Virgin and Child. He is accompanied by Saint Catherine, while his wife Elizabeth and daughter are shown alongside Saint Barbara. Their coats of arms are shown on the capitals above the two angels, and on stained- glass windows on the far right. The wing panels depict Sir John Donne's name saints, Saint John the Baptist (left) and Saint John the Evangelist (right). Easily portable when closed, Donne could have brought this triptych on his diplomatic travels.
