From the museum label: Christina wears mourning dress. She was widowed in 1535. The portrait was painted for Henry VIII who was seeking a fourth wife after the death of Jane Seymour. It is the result of a three-hour sitting with Holbein. The marriage negotiations failed but the painting was retained by the King.
