1634, Rembrandt van Rijn, Portrait of Aechje Claesdr. -- National Gallery (London)
From the museum label: This simple but compelling likeness demonstrates Rembrandt's sensitivity to the character of his subjects, and his skill in depicting the effects of age. The 83- year-old sitter was the mother of the Rotterdam brewer Dirck Janszoon Pesser. Rembrandt applied paint in brushstrokes of varying length and textures to suggest the unevenness of her soft, wrinkled flesh.
