1524, Parmigianino, Rest on the Flight into Egypt -- Courtauld Gallery (London)
From the museum label: This is one of the earliest works by the Italian artist Girolamo Francesco Maria Mazzola, nicknamed Parmigianino ('the little one from Parma'). He was only 20 years old when he painted it. His growing talent is already evident in the graceful figures of the angel and the Holy Family. However, their lack of interaction and the strange perspective of the ancient building behind them reveal Parmigianino's youthful inexperience.
The scene depicts the biblical story of the Virgin Mary, Joseph and the infant Jesus on their journey to Egypt to escape persecution.
