1907 (ca.), Paula Modersohn-Becker, Self-portrait with Lemon -- Royal Academy of Arts (London) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: More than half of Modersohn-Becker's roughly 60 self-portraits were made in Paris from 1906-07. This work's tall, narrow format and textured surface recall Roman-Egyptian Fayum mummy portraits made with encaustic (pigments mixed with beeswax and resin). These works captivated the artist when she visited the Louvre, where she absorbed a wide variety of influences. Modersohn-Becker sought a new mode of expression that combined the modernity of Post-Impressionism with the gravitas of ancient art, lending her paintings a timeless quality.
