1907, Paula Modersohn-Becker, Otto Modersohn Sleeping -- Royal Academy of Arts (London) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: In 1895 Paula Becker encountered paintings by Fritz Mackensen and Otto Modersohn at an exhibition and was deeply impressed. Both men were co-founders of the Worpswede artists' colony, where Becker moved in 1898 to study with Mackensen. She married Otto in 1901, and though he tried to be supportive of her career, her ambition strained against the expectations of marriage. She left Otto and moved to Paris in 1906, but that winter he followed her and they reconciled. In spring 1907 she returned to Worpswede, giving birth to a daughter, Mathilde, on 2 November. She died shortly after from an embolism, following a period of prescribed bedrest now known to carry risk.
