1935, Henri Matisse, The Dream (Le Rêve) -- Philadelphia Museum of Art (special exhibition)

From the exhibition label: This painting marks the moment when Lydia Delectorskaya became Matisse's model and muse. Its origin, according to Delectorskaya, was an incident in early 1935, when she was still working as a paid companion for Amélie Matisse, the artist's wife. Matisse happened upon her resting with her arms crossed over the back of a chair and asked her to hold still. The Dream reiterates that graceful, relaxed pose but also clarifies and augments it. The rectangle of the picture fills with the triangle made by her upper torso, head, and superposed arms, one of which has been extravagantly elongated. Pink and blue are the dominant colors, and their impact is maximized by accents of black at two corners, and of gold for Delectorskaya's hair.
