1940, Henri Matisse, Dancer Resting -- Philadelphia Museum of Art (special exhibition)

From the exhibition label: This picture belongs to a group that Matisse made with a model known only as Tamara after he returned from Paris to Nice in the fall of 1939. Visible over the woman's shoulder at the right is a large study in charcoal on canvas, perhaps Faun Charming the Sleeping Nymph, which Matisse reworked around this time. On the left, with its colorfully outlined internal border, is the painted tapestry cartoon Nymph in the Forest (Verdure) (seen in the previous gallery). Their presence here and in other works underscores both Matisse's concept of his studio as a creative laboratory and gallery of his works, and his inclination to reuse his own motifs.
