1937, Henri Matisse, Yellow Odalisque -- Philadelphia Museum of Art
From the exhibition label: The model Hélène Galitzine is dressed in a striped Turkish robe dating from the 1800s. This type of garment was in vogue in France during Matisse's time. Indeed, there is no confusing this figure with an odalisque, for the rest of her costume (white blouse, green printed skirt) and also the hairstyle mark her as a modern European woman of fashion like most of those that Matisse painted in the final years of the decade. Other prominent elements in this composition include an Algerian painted table from the 1800s or early 1900s and a French pewter jug from the late 1700s decorated with gadrooning, or convex curves, with a bouquet inside. Those objects were in Matisse's personal collection.
