1913 (ca.), Ernest Lawson, Harlem River -- Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York)

From the museum label: Ernest Lawson, along with Maurice Prendergast and Arthur B. Davies, joined with the Ashcan group in The Eight exhibition due to an association with gallery owner William Macbeth. Working in a distinctive impressionist style, Lawson favored New York views of Washington Heights and the Harlem River. In this version, he emphasized drama and design over topographical accuracy. Looking toward the Bronx from the Manhattan riverbank, he eliminated the bridge's wide masonry arches—a feat of modern engineering—and radically foreshortened the span on the Bronx side.
