1907, Winslow Homer, Early Evening -- National Museum of Asian Art (Washington)

From the museum label: Forming a monumental unit, these two women appear oblivious to the approaching sea captain and the buffeting coastal winds. They are a force of nature, like the landscape they occupy. The subject and muscular style of painting contrast with the light touch and fleeting themes favored by Whistler, Tryon, and Dewing. Homer began this painting in 1881 in the English fishing village of Cullercoats. He continued to revise it in his studio in Prout's Neck, Maine, only completing it in 1907.
