1661, Rembrandt van Rijn, Saint Bartholomew -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: Saint Bartholomew belongs to a group of evocative large-scale saints and apostles from the 1660s. Rembrandt portrayed the apostle, who preached in Asia, in a strikingly direct manner as a grave, yet commanding figure. The short knife (left), the instrument of Bartholomew's martyrdom by flaying, identifies him. Vigorous brushwork and thick textured layers of paint (impasto) in some areas are characteristic of Rembrandt's late career.
