1873 (ca.), Gustave Moreau, Autumn (Dejanira) -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: Shown here is the centaur Nessus abducting Dejanira, the wife of Hercules. On the distant cliffs, Hercules aims the arrow that will kill Nessus and rescue Dejanira. The picture also represents autumn, as Moreau wrote: "The centaur seeks to embrace this white and graceful form, which is about to escape him. It is a last gleam, a last smile of nature and life. Winter threatens. Night is coming on. It is autumn."
