1632, Rembrandt van Rijn, The Abduction of Europa -- Getty Museum (Los Angeles)

From the museum label: Jupiter, king of the gods, was captivated by Europa, princess of Tyre, and transformed himself into a white bull to seduce her. Beguiled, Europa climbed on his back and was spirited across the sea to the continent that would bear her name. Painted soon after his arrival in Amsterdam, this work epitomizes Rembrandt's masterful storytelling on a scale suitable for a city house. Through gesture and expression, he conveys the varieties of distress felt by the princess and her retinue.
