1910, August Macke, Lautenspielerin (Lute Player) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: The traditional German costume of the lute player and the still life in the foreground create a harmonious dialogue.
Presented at the first exhibition of the Blaue Reiter in Munich in 1911, Lute Player is characteristic of August Macke's portraits, imbued with tenderness and contained emotion. The blocks of colours with black contours, the bright and attractive tones testify to the influence of popular glass painting, common in Bavaria. The treatment of space, punctuated by the harmony of the colours and the arabesques of the still life, also reveal Macke's new interest in the work of Henri Matisse.
