1957, Jean Messagier, Acces a l'ete (Access to Summer) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)
From the museum label: "There is no question of doing abstract or figurative, but of seeking all the realities in things in order to attempt to access the universal." (Messagier)
Preceded by abstract interpretations of the Doubs department, where Jean Messager was installed, this painting is one of the first in which the artist practiced a new gesturalism capable of translating the essential rhythms of nature. In this evocation of the summer season, he uses large strokes to brush a warm orange shade that stands out against a bluish background, inviting active contemplation on the part of the spectator.
