1913, Gabriele Munter, Drachenkampf (Dragon Fight) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)

From the museum label: For certain artists at the beginning of the 20th century, the image of Saint George fighting against the dragon, which was borrowed from Christian imagery, symbolised their fight to establish their vision of art.

This painting was inspired by a small Russian popular art sculpture kept in the apartment that Gabriele Münter shared with Wassily Kandinsky in Munich. The latter depicted it in the Blaue Reiter Almanac that he edited with Franz Marc. In her transition from sculpture to painting, Münter made full use of colour, applied here with energetic brushstrokes, to render the hostile environment that the artists of the group were confronted with.
