1904, Andre Derain, La Seine au Pecq (The Seine at Pecq) -- Pompidou Center (Paris)

From the museum label: Wandering around the suburb, André Derain intensified and reproduced the reddening tones of autumn. After his military service, André Derain returned to Chatou in the Paris region, where he met up with another Fauvist painter, Maurice de Vlaminck. In their landscapes, the two artists cared about the reality of their time. For them, the banks of the Seine were no longer a place of leisure, as they were for the Impressionist painters, but a working place. The almost-photographic framing and deserted foreground with a high and oblique horizon line contribute to producing a vertiginous effect.
