1953, Ernest Crichlow, Harriet Tubman -- National Gallery of Art (Washington) (special exhibition)
From the museum label: Of the many Black protagonists who led struggles for liberation throughout the Americas, Harriet Tubman is among the most prominent. Born on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, Tubman emancipated herself from slavery and repeatedly risked her life to rescue enslaved people using a network of abolitionists and safe houses known as the Underground Railroad. Works such as Crichlow’s portrait highlight the dignity and agency of important Black leaders in the struggle for emancipation, countering myths of Black people’s tolerance of slavery or reliance on white people to grant them their freedom.
