1900, Pablo Picasso, Street Scene -- Phillips Collection (Washington) (special exhibition)

From the special exhibition label: Picasso painted this picture after he saw Daumier’s The Laundress at the World’s Fair in late 1900. Here he shows the mother and child from behind. Made small and vulnerable by their urban surroundings, they pass a tall man who menacingly looms over them. To emphasize the dreariness of the city, Picasso and Daumier both illuminate the buildings in the background planes of their pictures.
